For more than 90 years, the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra (WSO) has enriched the cultural life of Wheeling and the Ohio Valley with outstanding orchestral performances, world-class guest artists, exceptional musicians and excellent educational programs. Under the direction of dynamic Music Director John Devlin, the WSO performs a seven concert subscription series at the Capitol Theatre in downtown Wheeling. In addition, a SoundBites Series, coupling chamber orchestra music with gourmet dining, is offered at enticing venues including Oglebay Resort and the historic Scottish Rite Cathedral. The WSO’s holiday spectacular Symphony on Ice marks the start of the holiday season for thousands of area residents.
The WSO’s free outdoor concerts are the centerpieces for community-wide celebrations on the Fourth of July at Wheeling’s Heritage Port and on Labor Day Weekend at the Anne Kuchinka Amphitheater in Oglebay Park. Throughout the calendar year, WSO on the Go ensemble performances bring music to neighborhoods in Wheeling and the surrounding communities in West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania. West Virginia Independence Hall, built in 1859 as a federal custom house, served as the home of the pro-Union conventions of Virginia in 1861, the capital of loyal Virginia from June 1861 to June 1863, and the site of the first constitutional convention for West Virginia. The Renaissance Revival-style structure is a National Historic Landmark.
