Bicycle Tour of Historic South Wheeling – Sunday, September 12 – starting at 8:00 a.m.

This free tour will guide participants through the recently-designated South Wheeling Historic District and will highlight homes and some of the industries that at one time flourished in the area. All ages are welcome to attend the free tour. Helmets are required for all riders.

Bicyclists will gather along Heritage Trail at 36th Street and will be led along a route of about 2.5 miles that takes them past several sites of interest. Historians will be stationed at key locations to relate pertinent historical tidbits. Stops along the route will include the former Schmulbach Brewery, Bloch Brothers Tobacco, and Cooey Bentz, and the homes of entrepreneur and politician Jesse Wheat (shown below), glass manufacturer John Hobbs, and the icemaking Niebergall family. The tour will end at the South Wheeling Preservation Alliance Museum, where door prizes will be awarded.
