Celery Vases: A Victorian Status Symbol is on display at Oglebay Institute’s Glass Museum through January 2.

Between 1830-1880, celery vases were a symbol of wealth. Native to the Mediterranean, celery was exotic and expensive to grow. Those who had the means to serve it wanted to show it off in the most exquisite way possible. Glass vases were made to hold this prize vegetable – adorning dinner tables like flower arrangements.

This exhibit highlights celery vases and dishes made in Wheeling from 1835-1890 by four different glass companies: Sweeney, Hobbs, Central and Northwood.

Sponsored by James H. Frey and Mr. Michael P. Hires.
